<p class="MsoNormal">Although you might think the least sustainable option is a plastic Christmas Tree, but if you already own one, they last a long time, and if you keep it for over ten years, it has a lower carbon impact than a felled tree.</p>
<p>If you do want a real tree, consider buying a potted one that can be reused each year. If you&rsquo;re short on space and do want a felled tree, there are lots of Christmas recycling points where they can be disposed of sustainably.</p>

<h5 class="MsoNormal"><strong>2. Reuse Your Wrapping Paper</strong></h5>
<p class="MsoNormal">Using alternative wrapping papers made of newspaper or brown paper which can easily be recycled or reused for next Christmas will reduce your waste. If not, reusable gift bags are always a good option. Remember that cello tape can&rsquo;t be recycled, so be sure to remove it beforehand!</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Single-use decorations are a big cause of waste in the holiday season. The easiest way to tackle this is simply to re-purpose your decorations from last year. As the renewable energy sector continues to grow, demand for workers is on the rise alongside it.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Getting to the interview stage in this competitive field is already an achievement, but how do you ace the interview? We asked our recruitment team at ERSG for their top tips for making an impression at your renewable energy interview.</p>

<h5 class="MsoNormal"><strong>Do Your Research</strong></h5>
<p class="MsoNormal">Our first and most important tip for any interview is to do your research. This might seem like an obvious one, but it&rsquo;s impossible to overstate its importance.</p>
<p>​</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">This holds true for jobs in renewable energy. No matter how much experience you may have, you&rsquo;ll always want to use your prep time to get familiar with the company you are interviewing for. You&rsquo;ll have some time in the interim to prepare thoroughly. Make sure to reference what you&rsquo;ve learned about the company throughout the interview, not just when you&rsquo;re asked about it. For example, you could pepper some of the company&rsquo;s values and ethos into this section, demonstrating how they align with both your own values and your skillset. Little things will show you have a good attention to detail.</p>

<h5 class="MsoNormal"><strong>Demonstrate Your Passion and Skills</strong></h5>
<p class="MsoNormal">Although a lot of jobs in renewable energy might be on the more technical side, it&rsquo;s still important to show you have a real passion and drive for the role. Fortunately, sustainable energy is an industry it&rsquo;s easy to be passionate about. Renewable energy is vital to achieving our goals of a sustainable future, so there is a wealth of information to draw from in order to find your passion for this industry and convey that to a potential employer.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">In renewables, the jobs are often very technical, so it&rsquo;s also important to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of your area, and skills. Keep in mind that a lot of the skills you have may be transferrable within this industry, so if you can match any skills you may have to the job specifications, this is your chance to get specific. It&rsquo;s also a good idea to pepper this with things from the research you&rsquo;ve done.</p>

However, this is a vital part of the process, and harnessing it is key to a successful interview. There are many different ways to approach this section, but here are a few to get you started:</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Demonstrate your enthusiasm: These questions will be about how the company can help you to grow as an employee and the ways you could be constantly improving in order to excel at this role, or what an exceptional job performance looks like.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">This is a stage of the interview process that can often go overlooked. It&rsquo;s important if you want to make a lasting impression on a potential future employer. It can be as little or as much as you want, but make sure you leave them with something and make sure they remember you. This could be something as simple as an email or a thank you note. Be sure to restate your qualifications and any key points of interest, leave contact details and ask about the next steps.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">On Friday the 22nd of December, ersg organised a &lsquo;bring your child to work day&rsquo; to raise money for The Chartwell Children&rsquo;s Cancer Trust. We had festive activities set up to entertain the little ones, such as Christmas colouring and bauble-making.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Thirty-two ersg staff members brought in at least one child, and we had a total of forty-five children there on the day! Raising a nice pot of money for our chosen charity.</p>

They then work directly with the medical teams on the cancer and leukaemia wards to make sure the money is used where it is needed most.</p>

ERSG Hosts Bring Your Child to Work Day!

<p>​Last week, ersg partnered with a local school to support neurodivergent young people with their journey into the workforce. We gathered several of our team who were keen to help and devised a series of workshops to deliver across the morning to learn about jobs in both Renewable Energy and Recruitment. This quarter, we are working with two Inner-London schools to deliver these workshops and are committed to continuing to run them at least once a quarter.</p>
<p>​</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Our goal was to build workshops that complement the different learning styles of these young people. We understand that neurodiverse people have different styles of learning that often conflict with the classroom environment. With this in mind, we developed workshops with the aim of embracing all learning styles, catering for those who prefer visual spatial as well as logical verbal learning. We did this through a diverse and adaptable all styles of teaching, with short presentations about the industry paired with more involved small group sessions.</p>
<p>​</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We kicked off the day with an introduction to the Renewable Energy industry, asking them what they thought it was and what types of jobs might be available within it. We asked our consultants to give us their most interesting jobs within this field, and gave them short, engaging information on Rope Access Workforce, ROV Pilot and Marine Mammal Observer and, of course, Recruiter.</p>
<p>​</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We then split off into smaller groups to give a more involved and active style of teaching.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">This portion of the day included an office tour, interview, and CV coaching, ensuring that the students are well informed and equipped to put their best foot forward when looking to enter the workforce. We encouraged students to direct the workshops with their questions and lead with what most interests them.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive, both from the students and the staff. We will continue to run these workshops with local schools to offer employability workshops to empower neurodivergent young people to feel confident in their career options as they move forward into the workforce.</p>

<p>Our Japan Country Manager, Samuel Griffiths, presented at 11th Asia Offshore Wind Day in Tokyo, which was is held in conjunction with Smart Energy Week 2024. The event provided an opportunity to learn about the latest developments and updates in the wind energy market and to network with contemporaries and industry leaders.</p>

Acting as the industry representative, the Asia Wind Energy Association aims to capitalize on this opportunity. The association aims to develop and communicate conclusive policies to influence the decision-making process of the Asian governments to create a positive investment environment and enable greater deployment of wind energy in the Asia-Pacific region.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>What is Floating Wind?</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Wind power is stronger offshore than on land, as there are less barriers and more constant wind speeds, which provides a lot of potential for harnessing large amounts of clean energy. However, until recently, much of that power has been going to waste, due to the need for offshore wind farms to be built on fixed structures that only allowed farms to be built in shallow waters &ndash; only up to 60 meters deep.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Floating wind has emerged as a solution to this problem, allowing for wind farms to be built in deeper and more complex waters.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>How Does it Work?</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">In order for the turbines to remain afloat, they need to be affixed to&nbsp;<strong>floating platforms</strong>. Rather than being fixed to the seabed, these platforms remain balanced through anchors and moors. As of right now, these platforms can either be made of concrete or steel, or a mix of both, depending on the conditions of the sea.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Anchoring and mooring is achieved through one of several different types of weights. Right now, there are four basic technologies: Semi-Submersible, Barge, Spar and Tensioned Legs Platform. These will differ depending on things like wind speeds in the area, seabed conditions and the size of the turbine, with the aim of keeping them as stable as possible.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">&nbsp;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>What&rsquo;s Next?</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Continuing to develop this technology could lead to major breakthroughs in Renewable Energy, enabling the world to phase out carbon-intensive fuels in favour of clean energy and meet global NetZero targets.</p>
<p>​</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Despite the promise of floating wind, it still faces significant challenges before it can achieve the predicted growth. The high cost of foundations is one such obstacle, but factors such as competitive pricing are expected to dive down costs as demand rises. Policy makers are also key to creating the conditions for floating wind&rsquo;s success, as standardisation may be required for the growth of the industry, and to make it economically viable, though it is believed that consolidation will occur as projects are scaled up globally.</p>
<p>​</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">As of right now, there is widespread optimism for the potential of floating wind, and global capacity expected to increase tenfold in a generation, with experts predicting that it will be 20% of all offshore wind resources by 2050. As technology is rapidly improving to transform energy from fossil fuels to green energy, floating wind power will be a driving force to change the paradigm of the renewables industry.</p>

We spoke with several graduates whose background ranged from engineering to environmental studies, who were looking at a way to enter the industry but were facing barriers, namely a lack of specific offshore graduate programmes and appetite from clients to hire those with less onsite experience. If the government wants to ensure their net zero targets are met, it is clear more needs to be done to invest in both graduate programmes and apprenticeships.</p>

<p>Christophe has worked 25 years in the recruitment industry. Throughout his career, Christophe has held highly strategic positions at Fircroft Engineering Services, including Statutory Board Director for Global Sales &amp; Strategic Accounts, Global Sales Director, and Regional Director overseeing European and CIS operations. His deep understanding of the recruitment industry has enabled him to develop and implement effective business development strategies, forge strong relationships with clients, and drive growth and profitability.</p>

<p>He is a commercially astute Board-level Specialist, driving the creation and&nbsp;implementation of global cross-functional organisational strategies, solutions, and transformations in Professional Services. He leverages extensive multicultural/lingual senior leadership experience in fast moving change environments across developed and developing countries. He&rsquo;s recently joined ersg to take up the new position of Strategic Global Accounts Director. We sat down with him to ask about working with ersg and his hopes for his role and the Renewable Energy industry.</p>

<p class="MsoListParagraph"><strong>Tell us about your role at ersg.</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Initially, for the first six months, my role consists of working alongside six of our global accounts, networking at a senior level with the objective of maximising our presence worldwide. In nurturing these relationships, we not only increase our existing presence with them, but also try to identify additional services that we can offer them alongside our existing services. The key focus is to expand and grow our existing accounts.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The other part of the job is to identify developing accounts, the gaps where we do not currently have a contact but can provide services that fit their needs. I have already begun the process of targeting companies to begin the process of building relationships and offer our services. Further than the first six months, I will assess the outcome and if successful I will start to build a team under me including Strategic Global Account Managers with the aim of significantly expanding the number of accounts we cover.</p>
<p>​</p>
<p><strong>What do you feel excited / optimistic about in your role here?</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The beauty of this role first and foremost is that it is a brand-new role within the business, so we are building the role from scratch and being able to fill the gap created by the business to become more client focused. ersg are currently doing very well in terms of deliverables and the way we organise our vertical markets, but there is currently a gap in our account management. My role fits perfectly within that gap, so I am excited to see the business expand and continue to grow over the coming years.</p>
<p>​</p>
<p><strong>What is your hope for the future of Renewable Energy?</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I am excited to be involved in an industry that is booming right now. It&rsquo;s the perfect opportunity to be a part of something amazing with regards to Renewable Energy. Everyone wants to invest right now, and the future is looking incredibly bright. In terms of ersg, if we combine our strengths in delivery with strong account management, together with this market growth, things can only be positive for the future.</p>

<h3><strong>How &pound;24bn Investment in Renewable Energy and Climate Initiatives is Driving Growth and Sustainability</strong></h3>

<p class="Body">On the 4th July, the Labour Party emerged as the clear winner of the UK general election, with Kier Starmer leading them to secure 411 seats, gaining 214 seats from 2019. Their&nbsp;<a href="https://labour.org.uk/change/mission-driven-government/">manifesto</a> outlines priorities such as the economy, the NHS, and most notably, climate change.</p>
<p class="Body">&nbsp;</p>
<p class="Body">In their election manifesto, Labour stated that the climate crisis is &ldquo;the greatest long-term global challenge that we face, and the clean energy transition represents a huge opportunity to generate growth, tackle the&nbsp;cost-of-living-crisis&nbsp;and make Britain energy independent once again,&rdquo; to&nbsp;<a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/election-win-labour-power-pledges-085223064.html?fr=sycsrp_catchall">&ldquo;cut bills, create jobs and deliver security with cheaper, zero-carbon electricity by 2030, accelerating to net zero.&rdquo;</a></p>

<p>Labour has pledged to treble solar capacity, double onshore wind and quadruple offshore wind as key milestones towards achieving zero-carbon power by 2030. Taking a deeper look, here&rsquo;s what that means for the future of Renewable Energy:</p>

<p class="Body"><a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cyxx1lq50nlo?">Labour has promised &pound;24bn for green initiatives,</a>&nbsp;which is their biggest spending commitment in their new regime, making green policies the heart of Labour&rsquo;s plan for growth and prosperity. They have assigned &pound;1.7 billion per year to their&nbsp;<em>Great British Energy Company,</em>&nbsp;with the intention of increasing renewables and nuclear energy. They&rsquo;ve stated their aim to create 650,000 Renewable Energy jobs by 2030, drive industrial renewal, lower bills and create secure supplies of clean energy. Their policy also includes the building of new solar farms and onshore wind turbines.</p>

<p class="Body">In keeping with policy to support renewable energy development, the government has newly announced the lifting of the onshore wind ban in England. Changes to the National Planning Policy Framework took effect from 8 July 2024 and are part of an ongoing series of legal changes to promote and deliver green energy.</p>

<p>They said: &ldquo;Delivering our clean power mission will help boost Britain&rsquo;s energy independence, save money on energy bills, support high-skilled jobs and tackle the climate crisis. We are revising planning policy to place onshore wind on the same footing as other energy development in the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF).&rdquo;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/policy-statement-on-onshore-wind/policy-statement-on-onshore-wind">(gov.co.uk)</a></p>

<p class="Default">The party also announced a new Energy Independence Act to establish the framework for its energy and climate policies. <p class="Default">As the world tackles the challenges of climate change and the urgent need to transition to sustainable energy sources, hydrogen has emerged as a promising candidate in the renewable energy market. With its abundance, versatility, and potential for zero-emission energy production, hydrogen is a promising contender for a clean energy source to power our NetZero future.</p>

<h3 class="Default"><strong>Different types of Hydrogen</strong></h3>
<p class="Default">There are different types of Hydrogen, coded by colours, with the three main types being Green, Grey and Blue Hydrogen. In the context of renewables, Green Hydrogen is the most environmentally friendly, as it produces no harmful emissions. Green Hydrogen has been growing in popularity since the 1970s, it&rsquo;s main benefits being that it creates immersion-free fuel with the ability to power everything from transport, to homes, to industry.</p>

<p>It is acquired using an electrolyser, powered by renewable sources to separate hydrogen from water molecules, the only byproduct of the fuel source is water vapour, which is released when used. By replacing fossil fuels with hydrogen, these industries can significantly reduce their emissions.</p>

<h3><strong>Advantages &amp; Challenges of Hydrogen</strong></h3>
<p class="Default">Energy storage is one of the significant advantages hydrogen provides to the sustainable market. One of the challenges renewable energy sources like wind and solar pose is their unreliability &ndash; they do not produce energy continuously or predictably.</p>

<p>I spent two decades at a global recruitment firm before transitioning to ersg. While my previous experience involved collaborating with clients in the energy sector, it wasn't specifically focused on renewables. Despite my extensive background in recruitment, delving into a new sector presented a learning curve.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The exponential growth of renewables on a global scale motivated my decision to join an industry that not only expands but also contributes positively to the world ethically. I aspired to play a role in driving renewable energy forward, choosing to work for a company dedicated to sourcing talent for a sustainable future.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Given my extensive background in the technology sector, I observed a saturation of recruitment companies in the market. Leveraging my experience, I aimed to address our clients' recruitment challenges by introducing workforce solutions to the industry.</p>

<p>Every day is dynamic and engaging. I love connecting with individuals from various corners of the globe. Given the nature of our business, my work may involve interacting with stakeholders in Europe one day, shifting to the United States the next, and then reaching remote locations in Scotland. The spectrum of opportunities extends from framework agreements to Managed Service and Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO) prospects. What excites me most is the chance to design solutions that can offer life-changing career opportunities and contribute to job creation in local communities.</p>

<p>Winning the first RPO for my organisation over 15 years ago.&nbsp; It was to hire huge volumes of technical roles within a short time period.&nbsp; I absolutely loved it, and I learnt a lot from that experience and those I worked with.&nbsp; More recently with a client as the RPO provider to recruit up to 1,000 hires for a production facility in the US.&nbsp; &nbsp;</p>

As the new technology demands new skillsets within the field. Renewable energy is already a large and ever-expanding sector; according to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.irena.org/Publications/2023/Sep/Renewable-energy-and-jobs-Annual-review-2023">Renewable Energy and Jobs: Annual Review 2023,</a>&nbsp;the previous year saw 13.7 million people employed globally, with the biggest and fastest-growing sector being solar energy.</p>

The exponential growth combined with technological advances has led to an industry-wide talent shortage as he demand for employees is far higher than the number of skilled workers in the sector. According to the think tank The New Green Alliance, the government are aiming for fifty gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030, which is four times the rate we are currently building, and they need to attract&nbsp;<a href="https://www.energyvoice.com/renewables-energy-transition/wind/uk-wind/508924/uk-offshore-wind-needs-to-attract-70000-workers-by-2030/">70,000 workers to the</a>&nbsp;industry by then.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The solution lies in more focus on training and transferrable skills. According to The Annual Review of Energy and Jobs, &ldquo;Education and training must be expanded to prevent the widening of skill gaps. <p>According to the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.irena.org/publications/2022/mar/world-energy-transitions-outlook-2022">World Energy Transitions Outlook 2022</a><em>&nbsp;</em>report, to meet global Net Zero targets by 2030, the renewable energy sector will need to fill 38.2 million jobs. Unfortunately, a large proportion of these jobs are at risk of remaining unfilled, as women only make up about a third of the workforce in renewable energy industries globally. This gender gap is one of the most pressing challenges facing the transition to a sustainable energy future.</p>
