GIS Manager

Job Description

The GIS Manager will be responsible for leading the GIS team and ensure the efficient and accurate delivery of geospatial data outputs for the hydrographic and land survey projects. This is a critical role in integrating GIS technology throughout the project lifecycle, from project planning to final map production.

The GIS Manager will specifically be responsible for:

  • Oversee all aspects of the GIS department, including staff management, project planning, budgeting, and resource allocation.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive GIS strategy that aligns with the company's overall goals and objectives.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of spatial databases for hydrographic and land survey data, including bathymetry, seabed imagery, 3D point cloud data etc.
  • Utilize advanced GIS techniques, including 3D modelling and geospatial analysis, to enhance the interpretation of survey data.
  • Collaborate closely with hydrographic surveyors and data processing specialists to ensure seamless integration of GIS with survey operations.
  • Develop and implement quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy and consistency of all GIS outputs.
  • Establish and enforce rigorous quality control procedures to guarantee the accuracy and consistency of all GIS outputs.
  • Identify and implement new GIS applications to enhance the value of hydrographic survey data for clients.
  • Document and maintain clear and concise GIS workflows and procedures.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of company-wide data management policies.

Day to day duties may include:

  • Assign tasks and projects to team members based on their skills and expertise.
  • Conduct regular check-ins and meetings to monitor progress and address any issues or concerns.
  • Collaborate with project managers and stakeholders to identify GIS requirements for upcoming projects.
  • Develop project plans and timelines for GIS tasks and deliverables.
  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure seamless integration of GIS with overall project workflows.
  • Liaise with clients to understand their specific GIS needs and deliver customized solutions.
  • Ensure the integrity, accuracy, and security of spatial databases and datasets.
  • Develop and maintain data management protocols and standards to optimize data organization and accessibility.
  • Perform spatial analysis to extract insights and patterns from geospatial data.
  • Create maps, charts, and visualizations to communicate analysis results to stakeholders.
  • Utilize GIS software and tools to conduct advanced spatial modelling and simulation.
  • Provide technical support and assistance to team members and other departments regarding GIS software and tools.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to GIS data, software, and hardware.
  • Review GIS data and analysis results to identify errors or inconsistencies and take corrective actions.
  • Stay updated on the latest GIS technologies and best practices to enhance team capabilities.
  • Provide training and mentorship to team members to enhance their GIS skills and knowledge.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency gains within the GIS department.

Requirements for the role of GIS Manager will be:

  • Proficiency in GIS software platforms such as ArcGIS, QGIS, Auto CAD or similar tools.
  • Strong understanding of hydrographic survey techniques, data formats, and standards.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience in open-source web GIS applications for publishing and sharing GIS data, along with a working knowledge of PostGIS/PostgreSQL or GeoPackage spatial database systems, is highly desirable.

  • Managing and developing a strong team of competent and qualified personnel
  • Staff development and training
  • Professional performance reviews of junior staff at regular intervals
  • Appropriate management of any grievance, disciplinary or performance issues of members of the team according to company policies
  • Coordinating TOIL and all leave types for the team in balance with work demands, ensuring reasonable attempts are made to reconcile leave requests with work deadlines.
  • Ensuring policies and procedures as per Operation Manual and Employee manual are consistently adhered to by team members.
  • Informal and formal communication to Directors and staff members including written reports and submission of evidence in scenarios where policies and procedures are not adhered to by junior members of staff. Escalation of grievances, performance, and failure to abide by Company policies and procedures according to Employee Handbook
